On May 9, 2023, U.S. Government agency declassification officials and members of the public interested in Government information access processes met to discuss mandatory declassification review (MDR) requests and appeals. Mark A. Bradley, Director of the Information Security Oversight Office gave the opening remarks in which he discussed the role of the Interagency Security Classification Appeals Panel as the highest appellate body for classification decisions. Officials from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense discussed their MDR programs and related issues including the consolidation of the classified holdings of NARA’s Presidential Libraries at the National Declassification Center. William Burr of the non-governmental research organization, the National Security Archive, provided insightful commentary, and the assembled panel answered questions from the attendees of the forum.
